Thats the "Spirit" - Lucy races for Life!
On Sunday June 12th Lucy Warnes (Lifestyle Consultant) took part in the ‘Race for Life’ at
Lucy along with many other members of the Spirit Health Club Guildford successfully completed the 5k in a time of 40 minutes, raising over seventy pounds. She hopes to raise even more money next year and will be looking to improve on her time. When asked by a member why she felt it necessary to take part she replied ‘I entered alongside my mum and sister as we have had family that suffered from cancer and it was a good way of raising money for cancer research. It was an emotional day but very worth while, there were so many people there that it was a good atmosphere to walk in.’
The 'Halow Project' Sponsored Swimathon
A sponsored swimathon was held at the Spirit Health Club pool between the 17th and 18th of September. This was in aid of the ‘Halow Project’ which was specially chosen by the Mayor of Guildford and was open to everyone including staff, members of the club and members of the public.
The event was designed to raise money to help youngsters with special needs gain access to a better social life and employment. The project was originally founded by a group of parents each with a child with special needs. They recognised that the lack of post-educational facilities in the South East meant many young adults with special needs remain living with their parents, having little or no stimulation or structure in their lives and becoming isolated in the community.
The event asked for each participant to raise a minimum of £10 per person and for each participant to swim 50 lengths of the pool. There were no specific time set for this and participants could achieve this over the two days.
In total a whopping £313 was raised which was a massive achievement for all those that entered. Therefore, on behalf of Spirit Health Club Guildford, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated in this event. WELL DONE!!

Member testimonial
I joined the Spirit Helth Club in October 2002 following the first of my total knee replacement operations and hence the need to regain some semblance of fitness. I believe it is to be one of my more sensible decisions since the facilities are excellent, but more so because the staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. It is also good value for money. As a plus feature there are discounts on Club purchases and Hotel facilities such as the restaurant and accommodation. The social features organised by the staff are also good fun and entertaining. Over all the most endearing character is the congenial atmosphere and new friendships that are forged. I can certainly recommend membership.

The great Spirit Health Club Guildford Car Wash!
On Wednesday 5th September Spirit Health Club Guidford in conjunction with the Holiday Inn Hotel Guildford put on a Charity car wash. This was to raise money for one of the Mayor of Guildford’s chosen charitiess for 2007 – RASASC.
RASASC is a helpline run by, and for women and girls over 14. They offer support and information to women and girls who have been raped or sexually abused however long ago.
The day itself was a huge success with every department in the hotel doing their bit and getting their hands wet. Well done to everyone that took part, and in particular Club Manager Patrick who washed a total of 10 cars. Afterwards, when asked why he felt it necessary to hold charity events such as this he replied ‘holding events such as this is a good way to show that we care about our local community. We would also prefer to help our local charities rather than National charities simply because they receive less funding and therefore money raised are more likely to make a bigger impact".
Overall, all those at Holiday Inn Guildford managed to raise a total of £130, which is a great achievement.

A "Diamond day" for the Weeks
Spirit Health Club Guildford celebrated members Ron and Barbara Week’s diamond anniversary with a sizzling BBQ which was held in the hotel club suit. A photographer for the Surrey Advertiser was invited to take some professional photos of the memorable occasion with the couple joined by over 80 other members and friends.
Ron and Barbara are founder members having been members of Spirit Health Club Guildford for 20 years and are still going strong. They hardly ever miss a day to come in to chat with the staff and other members before eventually finding some time to do their daily exercises in the gym.
The evening itself was a huge success with club manager Patrick Fitzsimmons dazzling his guests with his “master chef” cooking skills. A memorable evening was capped off with a presentation of a beautifully drawn picture of the couple which other club members had clubbed together to get. The club also presented the couple with a few gifts to show our appreciation of their services to the club.
Special thanks must go to Patrick and his staff, The Surrey Advertiser and the chefs at the Holiday Inn. Thanks for a great evening!
Finally, watch out for our next member’s social events which will be a quiz night in October, followed by the Spirit Christmas Party in November.
